"Spanish Key"

30" x 40"

once I got about half-way through I realized it looked like a scene from one of my favorite movies, Collateral... with Tom Cruise (unintentionally) on drums... just reinforces my unbelievable respect for Micheal Mann.

AcrylicPaintings/forwebfinshed560.jpg

Currently Untitled

40" x 60"

This is the third in my new technique of painting with black gesso and acrylics.
I have found that this method allows me to paint with watercolor techniques in acrylics! I am really proud of the results :)
This painting is another in my series, "Live From The Mango Lounge"

"His Hands are Faster than Your Eyes"

48" x 48"

Currently on Display at The Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, MS

Puttin is shown with my painting of him just before the opening reception for my photos and paintings at the museum. One of the greatest nights in my life!

"Live at the Mango Lounge"

34" x 52"

based loosely on one of my Delta photographs... just finished!

AcrylicPaintings/nondowntime.jpg

"Down Time"
8"x8"

This is my third piece working with black gesso. I tried to paint this using the techniques
I use while painting with watercolors. I like the effects I got with using tons
more water than I normally use and letting the black gesso show through.

AcrylicPaintings/nonmingus.jpg

"Unintentional Mingus"

24"x30"

First off I titled this Unintentional Mingus because I started off painting a bassist from my imagination but realized after I had finished the whole painting and varnished it that it was somehow familiar... after a few minutes and looking up some images on the Internet I realized I had painting and unintentional portrait of Charles Mingus.

This was painted with black gesso and trying to reverse my process while using acrylics. Normally I paint the foreground/subject matter first and then the background last. In this one I started with a painted background...liking it so far!

Bluesman
AcrylicPaintings/nonprogbluesman.jpg
30x40 SOLD

"Bluesman"

30"x40"

This was one of my very first paintings. It is taken from a photograph I took of Big George Brock. Big George is a bluesman from St. Louis who has now begun performing all over the world. I was lucky enough to have my photography used as the covers of his second studio CD as well as on the covers of his documentary film, Hard Times.

I painted this one while living in Seattle, WA. My husband and I had just moved to the Pacific Northwest from Memphis, TN and I had lost my Delta inspiration to take photographs. After a few months of not producing any artwork and feeling homesick, I began painting from my photographs. This is one of my first pieces.

SOLD: Dallas, TX, 2007

websieIrie.jpg

"Irie"

26"x36"

I deeply love the music of India.Arie and this painting is a tribute to her. I left it in it's original matte state and did not varnish it. I felt this better depicted my idea of her earthy feel.

Private Collection

Effie's Lounge
AcrylicPaintings/webeffiesnew.jpg
30x40

"Effie's Lounge"

30"x40"

Effie's is a real place in Memphis, TN located downtown on Second Avenue. This is another painting I took directly from a photo of mine. While we were photographing the juke joint during the day, one of the owners from the soul food place across the street came over to introduce himself. His name was Randall and he invited us to come over and have ribs and spaghetti. He also told us about how everyone truly is welcomed in Effie's... that it is a tough neighborhood but come and have fun... if anyone gave us trouble, to tell them Randall sent us.

I love Effie's!

Stevie Wonder is my favorite musician of all time, nothing makes me feel as good as his music.

Soul of Powers
AcrylicPaintings/nonpowers.jpg
24x36 *On display at The Delta Blues Museum*

"Untitled - Michael Powers"

24"x36"

Michael Powers is a bluesman from NYC that I photographed in Clarksdale, Mississippi. I was dropping off another batch of my Delta Blues photographs to Cat Head Delta Blues and Folk Art store in Clarksdale and saw Michael Powers set up performing on the front porch of Cat Head. I feel like I got some of my best photos that day and this is one of my favorites of my paintings.

Bold as Love`

"Bold as Love"

24"x48"

Taken from a photo I took of L.C. Ulmer At Ground Zero Blues Club... the light hit his guitar and created wonderful distortion and abstractions. This is my first abstracted painting.

Lady Sunflower at the Mango Lounge

One Hand of a Two Trumpet Man
AcrylicPaintings/nonprogtrumpet.jpg
30x30

"One Hand of a Two Trumpet Man"

30"x30"

In Clarksdale, MS I photographed a trumpet player named simply, Boone. He plays with Wesley Jefferson's Southern Soul Band at Red's Lounge. He was a great musician and whats more, he played two trumpets at one time! This painting is a close up on how he has to hold his fingers on one of the trumpets.

"Deep Delta Blues"

36"x36"

Elam McKnight commissioned me to paint the cover of his 2007 CD "Supa Good", he wanted a woman who was a combination of Pam Grier and a Voodoo Priestess conjuring spells in the Deep Delta. I added my own influences of Hindu Goddesses, Belly dancers and my experiences in the Delta and came up with my Deep Delta Priestess.
